Description:

Metronidazole is the main representative of the nitroimidazoles; it is a synthetic antimicrobial drug product with high activity against anaerobic bacterial and protozoans. It is intended to treat protozoal infections and infections caused by anaerobic bacteria or mixed flora (intra-abdominal infections; mediastinitis; pelvic inflammatory disease (PID); septic abortion; anaerobic septicemia). Metronidazole is the agent of choice to prevent post-operative complications after colon and anorectal area surgeries. The cytocidal properties of metronidazole against hypoxic tumor cells are warranted clinical use of the drug as a radiosensitizer in man.
